Gift Guide Coffee Lover

If you know someone who is an absolute bean addict or home barista, check out this gift guide for coffee lovers! You can do better than a Starbucks gift card. There are so many different ways to make and serve coffee depending on what you are in the mood for. I definitely know some bean connoisseurs who taste coffee notes like a wine sommelier. Whether you like a cup of sugar and cream with a bit of coffee added, or you’re a straight black coffee drinker, you’ll find something on this list to enjoy.

I tried to keep this gift guide (mostly) under $50, to keep it affordable. This unfortunately meant excluding most espresso machines and deluxe pod coffee machines. Of course a regular drip coffee maker is fine (and usually affordable), but I wanted to get a bit more creative with this list. I also avoided regular coffee mugs because -let’s be honest- that’s kind of no brainer and everyone has different styles.

SPLURGE: Automatic Milk Frother – Hot milk, dense foam, airy foam, and even cold foam, this silent milk frother means home cappuccinos and lattes just got a whole lot easier! Even adding steamed milk to regular coffee makes a huge difference to the creaminess of the drink. Try experimenting by frothing non-dairy milk, eggnog, flavoured creamer, or even melted ice cream!
SAVE: Handheld Milk Frother– If you’re on more of a budget, this hand held milk frother also works really well (but requires a bit more technique). Add air to your milk and control the level of froth/foam. Just try not to move it around too much or you’ll make a mess and spash everywhere!
Automatic Bean Grinder – Grinding your own beans at home definitely affects the flavour of the grounds. This one is easy to use (and clean) and provides a consistent grind throughout.
Manual Bean Grinder– For the true bean artist, controlling and adjusting the grind of the bean makes a world of difference if you have the time and muscle to grind your own each morning
Pour Over Coffee & Pour Over Kettle – Slow drip coffee allows more control and reduces acidity in the brew, plus it looks much cuter than a regular drip machine. The Kettle allows for a narrow spout for more even control over the pouring.
French Press – Allow your coffee grounds to infuse the hot water (similar to tea) and then use slight (slow) pressure to push the filter down and tamp the grounds to the bottom. Reduces the acidity and increases the creaminess of the brew.
Travel French Press– If your mornings are a little more hectic and you need to brew on the go, this travel french press allows you to get the quality of the brew while you’re running around or in the car.
Portable Espresso Machine– Great for camping or at the office, produce a smooth espresso (with the crema!!) using manual piston pressure. Genius! Pair this with the automatic milk frother for easy lattes and cappuccinos
Mug Warmer– If you’re one of those people that like to savor their cup of coffee (or put it down and forget about it 🤦‍♀️) This mug warmer provides a place to put your mug that will keep it warm for much longer than normal. I am a person that likes their coffee warm or ice cold, but room temperature is just gross.
Coffee Scoop with Clip– This cute coffee scoop with attached clip is great for those that prefer ground coffee over beans that they grind themselves. Get a perfectly measured scoop, and keep the bag of grounds sealed to reduce staleness
Espresso Tamper – For those that already have an espresso machine, this adorable tamper squishes the grounds evenly into the portafilter so the water takes longer to pass through them, meaning a stronger tasting espresso. Most espresso machines do come with tampers, but if you buy one second hand (and save $$$$) you may need a replacement
Knock Box– Again this one is for espresso machines, basically you ‘knock’ the portafilter against the bar and it knocks the used espresso grounds into the base below. Plus used coffee grounds have lots of uses from compost to body scrubs!
Coffee Pod Holder– If your coffee lover prefers a 1 step pod machine, they’re going to need some place to store and organize all their pods!
Reusable Coffee Pods instead of disposable pods, these reusable pods allow you to put in your own grounds and save the environment (and save some $$). Just make sure to get ones that are compatible with your specific machine, and be warned you may need to “Hack” your coffee pod machine reader so it actually brews
Spice Art Pen – Make some great latte art with this cool pen! Load in espresso powder, hot chocolate powder, pumpkin spice, cinnamon, nutmeg, or powdered sugar and then pen with thinly stream it out allowing you to write cool messages, draw pictures, or use fun stencils!
Decorative Stencils– Use with the above pen, or simply sprinkle powder above the stencil to make cool designs on your coffee/latte
Coffee Syrup & Caramel – Make coffeehouse worthy flavored lattes, coffees, and iced coffees at home! Torani makes a wide range of cool flavors for about $11 per bottle. Most Starbucks will also sell you their signature flavored syrup bottles (again for $10-15) as long as they have a surplus in stock. Pro Tip – skip the “Sugar Free” syrups because they taste disgusting like pure aspartame and Splenda
BONUS: Making your own syrup at home for pennies. Simply dissolve sugar into almost boiling water (1:1 ratio) until the mixture thickens into a syrupy consistency. Don’t let it boil too long or it will turn to caramel or worse burn. Add your flavor of choice (try vanilla extract, peppermints, hazelnuts/hazelnut extract, cinnamon, or pumpkin spice) and allow the mixture to cool.
Cold Brewer & Slow Cold Brewer – Iced coffee fans rejoice! Opt for an automatic/portable version for iced coffee now, or do it the old fashioned way with slow (overnight) brewing. The slow brew method is also great for home made sweet iced tea
SPLURGE: Nitro Press Cold Brew– For the serious cold brew lover, the nitrogen cartridge adds an airy creamy consistency you can’t beat or replicate with traditional methods. It’s why Starbucks added Nitrogen cold brew taps to their shops.
Travel Mug – Traditional coffee lovers gift, this cutie keeps your coffee hot (or your iced coffee cold) on the go
Self Stirring Mug – a slightly more trendy/techie gift, this mugs creates a swirling vortex that skips the need to stir in cream/sugar
Turkish Coffee Pot– I once dated a guy who loved Turkish coffee, and I have to admit it definitely creates a thick, rich and creamy version of coffee. I admit it takes some getting used to the technique so you don’t boil over/make a mess, but I think it’s definitely a cool drink to try!
Stovetop Percolator– Creates a stronger brew than a regular percolator/drip coffee machine, but a little more fool proof than a Turkish coffee pot.
Coffee Book – I love this one for the history, science, and techniques it provides, plus the cover looks super cute on a coffee table or coffee bar.
Coffee Scrub– The caffeine in coffee grounds helps plump and exfoliate your skin. I wouldn’t use this on your face as it will be too harsh, but use it in the morning for your body/before you shave for a great smelling pick me up!
Coffee Scented Candle– Does anything smell more delicious and comforting than a cup of coffee? Enjoy the smell even when you can’t drink another drop
Coffee T-Shirt– This cute and trendy tee shows your love of coffee, but is a little more unique than the overused “But first, coffee” slogan

**Enhance any of these gifts with a little bit of alcohol- Baileys, Kahlua, Frangelico, Godiva, Whiskey, Rum, or even Tequila goes great in coffee!

BONUS :

If you or someone you know loves coffee, but is pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or breastfeeding try Mommee Coffee which has full caffeine, half caffeine, quarter caffeine and decaf blends. They are all low acid (to prevent heartburn), organic & fair trade beans, and use chemical free decaffeination processes (because regular decaf is actually a little bit horrifying how they take the caffeine out of the bean). It allows you to enjoy your favorite drink in a way that works for you while pregnant or breastfeeding. Because if anyone needs coffee the most, it’s moms!

Bonus:

As far as beans/grounds go, If you live in Canada I definitely recommend Roasti Coffee Co. Beans are definitely a preference (and lots of people prefer to roast their own!) My dad is a coffee aficionado to the point where every Birthday, Father’s Day, and Christmas we get him new beans to try (he prefers strong dark roasts). So if you do plan to include coffee grounds or beans in your gift try a sampler pack unless you know what they prefer to drink. Or try a Coffee Bean Subscription! If your coffee nut likes to try new roasts, try this subscription pack which will deliver different roasts each month! They ask a few questions to try to cater to your preferences, plus they include tasting notes and instructions for how to bring out the best in each bean.
