The Gift of Sleep:
I think meditation is so underutilized and so valuable! Meditation is a great way to relax before bedtime. I really love the Headspace Meditation App because it has such a wide variety of guided meditations. Guided meditation makes meditation much more approachable for people that aren’t used to meditating. It is a paid subscription, so giving a meditation app is a super easy (last minute) gift!
Weighted Blankets hit the market in the past few years and they have completely changed the sleep game. Studies have shown that sleeping with a weighted blanket helps reduce anxiety and help people to fall asleep faster and stay asleep by making you feel grounded. The sense of comfort they give is like falling asleep in a hug. Check the guide for how heavy your weighted blanket should be based on your size as there is a perfect proportion. There are also weighted blankets made specifically to be cooling for people that get really warm when they sleep.
Silk is so good for your hair and skin! Sleeping on a silk pillowcase can help with damaged hair that would normally catch and be pulled by normal pillowcases. It also helps avoid tugging on your skin and prevents oils from building up overnight. It is an absolute beauty essential.
Warming Blanket or Cooling Blanket
Maybe you are a cold or a warm sleeper. Or you might not have control over the temperature in your house or live in an extreme environment. These blankets help keep you at the perfect temperature as you sleep, no matter where you are!
Full Body Pillow
Not just for pregnant women! A full body pillow can help align your spine, hips, shoulders, and neck while you sleep. No one told me that as I get older, sleeping becomes an extreme sport! You can throw out your back or severely cramp your neck just by sleeping funny. Especially if you are a side sleeper these full body pillows are so comfortable!
Egyptian Cotton, Bamboo, and Satin are my favorite types of sheets. In winter I might switch to flannel, but otherwise I like smooth and soft sheets to cuddle up in!
Eye masks are great for helping to block out light (especially if you have to sleep during the day). They also help provide a sense of comfort as the gentle pressure around your eyes/head can help you relax. There are lots of different kinds of sleep masks. Silk ones protect skin against tugging/oils that lead to wrinkles or acne. 3D eye masks make sure your eyes, eyelashes (and extensions!) and eyebrows are protected from being squished while you sleep. I hate when I wear an eye mask that squishes my eyebrows in the wrong direction of hair growth and end up giving me a headache. There are also high tech eye masks complete with Bluetooth for music/white noise while you sleep. These ones are perfect for trying to sleep while on an airplane/travelling.
On a similar note, sleep headphones can help block out any noise and play soothing music/noise. I will give a general warning though for ear buds that go in your ears. Ear buds can trap moisture and bacteria in your ears especially with prolonged use. This can lead to ear infections or even mold/fungus growing in your ears! That’s why a headband is going to be a better bet in the long term if you like sleeping with headphones.
White Noise Machine
Great for babies and adults! White noise or any sort of soothing calming noise is proven to help people fall asleep. For babies it mimics the loud, muffled noise they would hear in the womb. For adults it takes us to a place of calm and blocks out any outside noises. These options are both great for proving great sound quality and a variety of noises. Plus the Hatch white noise machine doubles as a nightlight and can be controlled by your phone!
Humidifier/Essential Oil Diffuser
Smell is one of the strongest senses tied to memory and emotion. Scents such as lavender as shown to have a very calming effect, but there are lots of calming essential oil blends. I like combination humidifiers and essential oil diffusers because I always feel so dry when I sleep. Humidity helps coat my nose and throat throughout the night so I wake up feeling fresher.
Lavender Lotion/Body Oil/Sleep Spray
Lavender has such great soothing properties. Try a lavender lotion with magnesium to help relax your muscles before bed and wake up hydrated. I also love adding a body oil during winter to really up the hydrating factor. You can also use the oil to help give yourself a massage before bed to relax your muscles. A lavender pillow spray can also help relax your mind and help you breathe deep as you fall asleep.
Massage is a great way to relax tight muscles to help you fall asleep. A long day and tired body can keep you up at night with aches and pains. This massager is my absolute favorite for my whole body. It heats up as it rotates through different speeds and techniques.
Melatonin, lavender, and chamomile all help promote the sleeping chemicals in your brain. Whether it’s a soothing cup of tea or a pill ingesting these before bed can help make you sleepy. I personally prefer a tea because I love a warm drink before bed.
No more cold feet! New studies have shown that sleeping with your socks on can improve your sleep! Keeping your feet snuggly and adorable with these fuzzy socks. I also love putting lotion on and then fuzzy socks so my feet wake up hydrated and soft.
I love getting new PJs as a gift! Silk or cotton in summer, flannel in the winter. Especially with quarantine I basically live in PJs 24/7. Comfy, cozy, and cute!
Put away screens before bedtime! How many times have we all heard that? And yet how many of us still fall asleep scrolling Instagram? Guilty! Try a nightly journal for 5-15 minutes to reflect on the day. Or try reading a chapter or two to unwind. If you read on a kindle or other device though, make sure you set it to turn the blue light off, or get a pair of blue light reading glasses!
One of the hardest part about falling asleep, is knowing you have to wake up. How many times have you lied in bed at night thinking “Okay if I fall asleep RIGHT NOW I’ll get 5 hours of sleep”. It’s super important to trust your alarm clock so you can fall asleep without worrying about it. I like ones that allow me to play music to wake up to and that I can easily turn away from me during the night. Some smart alarms even tell you the weather for the day when they go off!
An alternative to a traditional alarm clock is a sunlight alarm. These gentle alarms are programmed to mimic waking up to the sunrise. 20 minutes before your alarm time they slowly start to brighten with warm light. I love using these in the winter when you have to wake up before the sun rises. I find it so hard to get up when it’s still dark outside. And additional sunlight (even artificial) can help combat SAD (seasonal affective disorder)!
If you live in a warmer climate, or are just a warm sleeper in general a fan can make your sleep more comfortable. Plus a cool breeze as you’re bundled up snug as a bug is so relaxing. Bonus it doubles as white noise!
If you are sensitive to light, have to sleep during the day, or have an annoying streetlight right outside your window, you need blackout curtains! Plus I love packing a pair of travel blackout curtains for visiting other time zones and battling jetlag. They attach to the window/wall with suction cups and still block out all the light!
Drift off to sleep under the stars. Relax as you float across the sky. I love this projector because it is remote and voice controlled so you can turn it off before you fall asleep.
